Thursday Outlook: Three Big Conference Series Open This Week

Here’s your Core College Baseball Thursday outlook — three important games to kick off more conference play.

West Virginia proves they belong.

Kentucky gets tested.

In just week 2 of conference play, LSU is already feeling the pressure to win now.

1. The Big 12 Grind: BYU (10-9) at #23 West Virginia (13-4)

The Mountaineers are leaning into their home-field advantage with a "Coal Rush" blackout game to open the series.

  • The Storyline: Maxx Yehl (3-0, 0.72 ERA) is the story for WVU, coming off a 12-strikeout gem that earned him National Pitcher of the Week. BYU counters with a resilient lineup, but they’ll have to solve a WVU pitching staff that leads the Big 12 in ERA (3.14).
  • Pitching Probables:
    • Game 1: RHP Garrison Sumner (BYU) vs. RHP Dawson Montesa (WVU)
    • Game 2: RHP Thomas Santana (BYU) vs. RHP Chansen Cole (WVU)
    • Game 3: TBA (BYU) vs. LHP Maxx Yehl (WVU)
  • Weather in Morgantown: Keep an eye on the sky. Friday shows a 75% chance of rain at night with a high of 65°F, while Saturday clears up for a partly sunny afternoon around 68°F.

2. SEC Power Struggle: #5 Kentucky (18-2) at #24 Ole Miss (17-5)

Kentucky is riding a 13-game winning streak into Oxford, but Swayze Field is a notoriously difficult place to maintain a run.

  • The Storyline: The Wildcats have been nearly perfect at home, but this is their first true SEC road test of 2026. Ole Miss is looking to bounce back after a tough road series at Texas, and Tristan Bissetta (.407 AVG) is swinging a hot bat, coming off a multi-homer performance earlier this week.
  • Pitching Probables: Thursday night’s opener is projected to feature RHP Owen Kelly for the Rebels.
  • Weather in Oxford: Beautiful baseball weather. Expect sunny skies all weekend with highs reaching 77°F on Friday and climbing to a warm 83°F by Sunday.

3. The Marquee Matchup: #11 Oklahoma (17-4) at #46 LSU (15-7)

This is the marquee matchup of the week — two perennial powers meeting in the electric atmosphere of Alex Box Stadium.

  • The Storyline: LSU is looking to right the ship after falling in the rankings, while Oklahoma is trying to prove their Top 10 status is permanent. The drama peaks on Thursday night as Cameron Johnson (3-0, 3.04 ERA) takes the mound for Oklahoma against his former LSU teammates.
  • Pitching Probables:
    • Game 1: LHP Cameron Johnson (OU) vs. RHP Casan Evans (LSU)
    • Game 2: RHP LJ Mercurius (OU) vs. RHP Cooper Moore (LSU)
  • Weather in Baton Rouge: Perfect conditions. Highs will be in the upper 70s with clear, sunny skies and no rain in the forecast to disrupt the series.
